Frequently asked questions

How do I download the speech model?

Dicta Dork needs a speech model to make text. You download it once, inside the app.

There are two models: Standard (488 MB) and Accurate (574 MB). You download one at first launch, on the last intro screen (‘Download 488 MB’), or later in Settings. That's also where you pick which model to use.

Use wifi if you can. Keep Dicta Dork open until the download is done.

Does the download stop halfway? Then it starts over. Dicta Dork throws away the half file and asks you to try again. So make sure you have a stable wifi connection and enough free space. Dicta Dork checks the free space first and warns you if the model won't fit.

How do I use Siri?

Not in the current beta. Record with the big round button in the app. It’s hard to miss.

Outlook won't open, or refuses the text

Dicta Dork hands your text to the Outlook app on your iPhone.

Dicta Dork can only find out one thing: whether Outlook can be opened. If not, Dicta Dork says Outlook isn't on this iPhone. You then choose ‘Copy text’ or ‘Open App Store’. Sharing always works with the ‘Share’ button.

Does your organisation manage Outlook with Microsoft Intune? Then a policy from your organisation may block passing on text. Dicta Dork can't tell the difference between ‘Outlook isn't installed’ and ‘Outlook isn't allowed to do this’, and gets no notice from that policy.

Dicta Dork can't get around that policy. Ask your IT department what's allowed.

If your organisation allows it, use Copy or Share in Dicta Dork.

How does the word list work?

Put names and jargon in the word list. Dicta Dork then spells them exactly the way you entered them. Your client's unpronounceable surname included.

You'll find the word list in the app: Settings → Word list.

Where are my dictations?

On your iPhone, in the app's history. Not with us.

By default your dictations stay for 3 months, your recordings for 7 days after transcription. You change that in Settings: 1, 3, 6 or 12 months or forever for the texts, and until the text is done, 7 days, 30 days or until you delete them for the audio.

If you delete the app, your dictations are gone. Copy or send what you want to keep first.

Your iPhone backup only contains your settings and your word list. Dicta Dork excludes your recordings, your texts and the speech model from the backup. If you restore a backup to a new iPhone, you get your word list back but not your dictations, and you download the model again.

Why “Dicta Dork”?

Because dictation deserves a little nerd who takes it very seriously. The app used to be called Sotto. Same app, louder name.
